South Korea has a strong bathing culture. Hot springs, called oncheon, feed bathhouses and spa towns across the country, and most are indoor facilities rather than outdoor pools.
Busan: Dongnae and Heosimcheong
Dongnae, in northern Busan, has been a hot spring area for centuries. Its best-known bathhouse is Heosimcheong, a large complex with many baths at different temperatures. Haeundae, by the beach, also has hot spring baths.
Onyang Oncheon
Onyang, in Asan, is one of Korea’s oldest spa towns, used by Joseon-era kings, and is reachable by subway and train from Seoul.
Yuseong Oncheon
Yuseong, in Daejeon, is a hot spring district with hotels and public foot baths.
Suanbo Oncheon
Suanbo, in North Chungcheong, is a quieter mountain spa town known for its alkaline water.
Bathhouse etiquette
Bathing is nude and separated by gender. Shower before entering the baths, tie up long hair, keep towels out of the water and keep voices low. See our Japan onsen etiquette guide for similar customs, and the South Korea map.
