The state of Hidalgo, two to four hours north of Mexico City, is the country’s hot springs heartland. Its canyons and valleys hold thermal parks, known locally as balnearios, that range from simple pools to large resorts.

Las Grutas de Tolantongo

Tolantongo, in a deep canyon near Cardonal, is Hidalgo’s most famous spot. Warm water flows from a cave into a turquoise river, and terraced pools cling to the cliffside. There are hotels and campsites in the canyon, and the road in is long and winding.

El Géiser, Tecozautla

El Géiser in Tecozautla is built around a natural hot water and steam source. It has thermal pools at several temperatures, a steam area and lodging, and suits families.

Grutas Xajhá and other balnearios

Grutas Xajhá is a thermal water park in Hidalgo with pools and caves. Dozens of smaller balnearios are spread around Ixmiquilpan and Tecozautla, many with slides and picnic areas.

Tips

Bring cash, as rural parks may not take cards. Go on weekdays to avoid crowds, and pack water shoes for river and cave pools. See the Mexico map.
