Germany has a deep spa culture, with hundreds of spa towns and thermal baths. Many are fed by natural thermal springs, and the word “Bad” in a town’s name signals a long bathing tradition.

Baden-Baden

Caracalla Therme is a modern thermal pool complex with indoor and outdoor pools and a large sauna area. Next door, the Friedrichsbad, opened in 1877, offers a Roman-Irish bathing ritual of about 17 steps through hot air rooms, steam rooms and pools, used without clothing.

Aachen

Charlemagne made Aachen his favorite residence partly for its hot springs. Carolus Thermen uses spring water that rises hot from deep below the city.

Wiesbaden and Bad Ems

Wiesbaden has many hot springs and the historic Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme, a bathhouse with Art Nouveau tiles. Emser Therme in Bad Ems has pools on the Lahn River.

Big therme complexes

Therme Erding near Munich is one of the largest thermal and spa complexes in Europe, with slides, pools and a huge sauna area.

Sauna etiquette

  • Textile-free: no swimwear in saunas, and usually mixed.
  • Towel: sit or lie on a full-size towel so no part of you touches the wood.
  • Shower before entering, and after each sauna round.
  • Aufguss: scheduled infusions where an attendant pours water on stones and wafts hot air. Do not leave mid-session unless you must.
  • Quiet: relaxation rooms are for silence.
