Central America sits on a chain of volcanoes, and the highlands of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have many hot springs, known as termales or aguas termales.

Guatemala

Fuentes Georginas, in the cloud forest above Zunil near Quetzaltenango (Xela), has steaming pools surrounded by ferns and mist. It is a popular day trip from Xela. Around Lake Atitlán, a few small termales and saunas use geothermal heat, but most visitors come for the lake’s views and villages.

El Salvador

Termales de Santa Teresa, in Ahuachapán, is a spa with a series of thermal pools fed by geothermal water, in one of the country’s main geothermal zones. Other termales in the region offer simpler day passes.

Honduras

Near Copán Ruinas, the Luna Jaguar hot springs spa has pools spread through the forest beside a river. Near Gracias, in western Honduras, simple thermal pools are a short drive from town.

Belize

Belize has no well-known developed hot springs. Travelers wanting a soak cross into Guatemala or Honduras.
