Most US hot springs are in the West, but the Appalachians have a handful of warm springs that have drawn bathers since colonial times.
Hot Springs, North Carolina
The small town of Hot Springs, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the French Broad River, has a resort with private outdoor tubs fed by mineral water around 100°F. Book a tub ahead, especially at weekends. See the North Carolina map.
Virginia: Bath County
The warm springs of Bath County include the historic Jefferson Pools at Warm Springs and the springs at the Omni Homestead resort in Hot Springs, Virginia. The water is warm rather than hot. See the Virginia map.
West Virginia: Berkeley Springs and the Greenbrier
Berkeley Springs, the closest option to Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia, has a state park bathhouse with warm mineral water and private soaking tubs, plus spa packages in town. The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs has sulphur springs and a large outdoor pool.
New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut
